Spring means it’s Tulip Time in Holland, Michigan.  2022 has been long awaited to finally have the unrestricted Tulip Time Festival.  In 2020 the festival was canceled due to Covid and in 2021 a lot of events were pulled out due to restrictions.  However in 2022 May 7th – May 15 they are planning on the full festival.  Tulip Time Festival in Holland Michigan is a celebration of the Dutch heritage and culture full of traditional clothes, dances, parades, art , food and a copious amount of tulips. Over 6 million tulips are planted throughout the city and attractions in the area. So bring your loved ones, your camera and be ready for a memorable, fun filled trip like no other.

1. Nelis’ Dutch Village    

Nelis’ Dutch Village is the best place to go in Holland, Michigan to experience the Dutch culture. This beautiful theme park makes you feel as if you are in the Netherlands as it were 150 years ago.  Their focus is on honoring and teaching about traditional foods and crafts such as wooden shoes, candles and hand painted Delftware. One of the biggest highlights is the clog dancing.  This is an awesome experience for the whole family to learn and perform the traditional clog wooden shoe dances. 2. Windmill Island Gardens

This beautiful 36 acre garden is full of over 100,000 tulips that take breathtaking photos in the spring and annual plants and flowers fill the ground in the summer.  You feel like you are in the Netherlands walking around all the dikes, canals and picnic areas.  However the main attraction is an amazing 250 year old working Ducth windmill called “ DeZwaan ”.  You can start by watching a 12 minute movie of the story of DeZwaan before taking a tour of the windmill.  In the tour you will learn all about the purpose and uses of a windmill.  Your tour guide will also take you to the viewing deck where your eyes will feast on the tulip gardens below. For more info on Windmill Island Gardens click here https://visitwestmi.com/windmill-island-gardens/

3. Veldheer’s Tulip Gardens & Deklomp Wooden Shoe & Delft Factory

Veldheer’s Tulip gardens is the best place to view and buy tulips. Started in 1950 when Vern Veldheer planted 100 red and 300 white tulips on this hobby farm.  Now veldheer’s plants over 5.5 million tulips for you to walk through and enjoy.  Veldheer is so much more then tulips. You will also see 50,000 daffodils, 10,000 hyacinths and 20,000 crocus perfect for a continuous parade of color.  Just perfect for any garden enthusiast or photographer.

De Klomps Wooden Shoe and Delft Factory keeps the tradition of crafting wooden shoes and hand painted Delftware.  It takes almost a full week to produce delftware and this is the only production factory in North America. They have over 400 different hand painted Dutch pottery items you can purchase.  You also have the opportunity to talk to the artists as they hand paint these traditional dutch designs and glaze each item for the perfect shine.

At De Klomps you can also purchase wooden shoes from doll size all the way to size 14 adult shoes.  These shoes are made on authentic Dutch machinery that was designed especially for making wooden shoes.  But don’t worry they have a wooden shoe hand carver that was specially trained and received his diploma in wood carving from the Netherlands.  Your purchased shoes can be customized with almost anything you can imagine and makes a great souvenir to remember the perfect vacation in Holland, Michigan.
